Building thirteen presented many challenges that were both practical and aesthetic. The Art Department lacks any clear identity, stylization, or way–finding system on the interior and exterior structures of the building. This lack of identity causes confusion among students, faculty, and visitors. A common question among visitors is, “Where is the art office?” Also, visitors and students alike both felt confused as to which floor they were currently on. To solve these problems, our group created an identity that represented art, design, and students.
The new identity began with a minimal use of color. Whites walls help to open up the hallway corridors and not clutter an already narrow path, while the entry point halls contrast with dark cement–colored walls. This contrast helps to move visitors through the space and also makes it easy to recognize key features. Our use of green emphasizes these key features, such as elevators, restrooms, water fountains, and the art office. The minimal color palette of white, gray, and green makes it simple to highlight and stylize specific areas without over–saturating and cluttering the space. The use of wood panels helps direct visitors to signage, directories, entrances, and exterior stairways.
